Team Random once again made the trip across the pacific to the Santa Cruz paddlefest to sample the great waves of Steamer Lane. We arrived on Monday afternoon and we weren’t disappointed, epic conditions which continued up until Thurs. Dan Crandall was putting on a show for us all pre competition, surfing the outside reef bombs without fear, Galen was getting air, Darren was pulling into some sick barrels and I was just doing my thing, so much fun. Someone decided to pinch Darren’s Kayak off the roof of the car on Wednesday which put a dampener on everything, mine would have been gone as well if I hadn’t decided to stay out in the surf.

Friday morning and the wind had gone onshore which combined with the rain made conditions pretty miserable but still contestable. A few high scores were locked in Galen and Dave showing the way in HP while Darren and Stefano surfed one of the best IC heats I’ve ever seen.

Saturdays conditions had to be seen to be believed, Gale force onshore winds, rain, hail and 15ft Plus monsters pounding the lane. The paddle out alone was 30 minutes from Cal's beach needless to say some people just weren’t going to go in. The organizers made the decision that the contest would finish today and that scores would be combined from Friday as Sundays conditions were looking even worse. Jim Grossman nailed a bomb set in his IC heat which gave him enough points for the IC title closely followed by Stefano. I came up just short to Galen’s 66 point total from Day 1, which gave him the HP title 2 years running. The presentation party at the Coconut Grove was awesome bring on 2012.
